When curmudgeon Robert Theodore Plee decides to run for president, he vows to get the country back on track by shutting down the schools and putting children to work. Plee declares: “Dear people who make this great country so grand: Let's take back our nation, the time is at hand.Let's mold these kids now, forget making them scholars. We must teach them hard lessons, like the value of dollars!” The news that Old Man Plee wants to take the child out of kids doesn't sit well with six-year-old “daydreamer and ultimate kid” Roger Nix (or his teacher, kindergarten class, and a few apt imaginary friends, for that matter), so the whip-smart boy takes action and puts his name on the ballot.“I'll run against him,” Roger said with a shout. “I'll run for president—have you no doubt!” And so begins Roger's campaign that prizes the importance of laughing, learning, and play, and, above all, imagination.
