boomerangs is back

When Fenway Health announced that their iconic Boomerangs stores, which for many years have raised funds for HIV/AIDS causes, were closing, we began conversations with them about carrying the torch forward. We’re re-opening the beloved storefront on Mass Ave in Cambridge this year!

  • What mission will these stores support?

Boomerangs has had a huge impact on the community in the 20+ years it operated first under AIDS Action and then under Fenway Health. Under More Than Words, we are dedicated to being the same safe community space while offering a mission-driven shopping experience. The store will be run by graduates of our job training program, accessing supportive employment while they work on long-term career and education goals.

  • Who will work in this store?

More Locations = More Long-Term Opportunities for Youth: Boomerangs by More Than Words will be staffed by alumni of MTW’s existing program, providing stable employment to help young adults thrive. In running the store, the staff will gain hands-on job training and access to long-term supports.  All revenue will support our youth empowerment mission!

  • What will I find in these stores?

We will continue to be a welcoming community space offering sustainable, affordable shopping with a wide range of items. The new Boomerangs by More Than Words will operate at 563 Massachusetts Avenue in Cambridge and is anticipated to open later this year. The store will feature curated second-hand fashion, accessories, books, homegoods, and music, and will continue the legacy of mission-driven thrift in Cambridge. Unlike our South End and Waltham locations, which focus on books and artisan gifts, Boomerangs will be thrift stores centered on affordable, curated pre-loved items for a great shopping experience.

  • What about the South End and JP locations?

More Than Words is currently exploring the possibility of opening a store in Jamaica Plain where Boomerangs operated. Given More Than Words current bookstore location in the South End there are no plans to open a second store in that neighborhood.
